Against the odds

I am so glad I didn't take a bet on breeding occuring on Soil Hill this spring! The top has now been churned up several times, with lorries coming and going regularly. Yet, today 7 Skylarks were singing and I had a big surprise to find a pair of Lapwing have taken up residence. The birds were displaying in an area of previously turned ground, despite a digger being active about 80 metres away. I got the birds attention immediately, they tracked me as I walked along, in a direction away from where I feel their nest is. Later on, at a very respectful distance, I saw one of the birds return to where I first observed it. Let's hope the brood hatches before the excavations are extended (goes without saying, really).

A pair of Wheatear I was concerned about, before my trip to Sri Lanka, thankfully did not pursue their breeding instincts and have left the area.
