Mediocrity Enshrined - Undone

Leaving the hovel full of enthusiasm was my first big mistake today.
SH 1000 hrs passage only 3 Whitethroat, 3 LBBG > W, usual other sp.
Ogden was condusive to a nervous breakdown. 3 BH & 1 each Common & LBBG. All the goodies have gone, I wonder if the shouts and screams were influental? I tell myself the little people have got to learn about wildlife somewhere.
2 each Blackcap, WW, Chiffchaff singing. Lets move on to Mixenden...

Someone opened the taps 2 mins after leaving the lodge house. A female Sparrowhawk circling with 3 escorting mobbing Swallows.
Pr Pied Wagtail, 1 each Bullfinch, Mistle Thrush, House Martin & Swift. The track up from Brookhouse coughed up only my 2nd local Whinchat of the year. Also Stock Dove, Whitethroat, pr Grey Partridge & Curlew, Skylark, Linnets, Meadow Pipits, Chiffchaff, WWs.
Then within 400 metres of the reservoir the taps were turned back off.

A Local Walk

Poked my head out of the back door at about 0620 hrs to see if the visiting Jay that first appeared some 10 days ago was in either of our gardens with no luck. Things were very quiet until I got to the junction of New Park Rd with Albert Rd where the Whitethroat I spotted last Sun was still displaying and singing.
Then a real rarity for Queensbury occurred at Mountain; of all birds a Nuthatch was calling loudly from the only tree situated behind the former Mountain Eagle pub. A single Lapwing, pr Pied Wagtail and Linnet were also in this area.

SH 0730 hrs nothing from the Sedge Warbler today and the Lapwings appeared to have legged it too.
LEO, 2 Snipe - the chipping bird in the bog and one flushed from the top. 5 Reed Bunting, 3 Whitethroat, distant Curlew. c20 Linnet, few Goldfinch, c9 Skylark, Meadow Pipits, pr Blackbird, Robin, couple Dunnock, 5 Swallow.

Low Moor Dams

Sparrowhawk male overhead from house front yard on way down to Cock Hill where 1 Swift, few Swallow, Blackcap were hanging in the 'hood.

Harold Park Lake: Mute Swan yellow leg ring 468 with 5 cygnets. I couldnt read anything from legs of its mate. 6 Tufted, 1 GSW, Coots with 2 nests and young. Numerous Canada incl. goslings.

I had the pleasure of bumping into Judy Hogg who brought me up to speed regarding Swan Y725, which happened to be the mate of the a/m 468 but had been re-ringed after a fish hook horror story.

Park Dam: 1 each Little Grebe & Greylag, pr GC Grebe with 1 juv. 1 House Martin ditto Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat. 1 Tufted, c6 Coot incl one nest where a Crow was eyeballing very recent fledgelings.
Never known it so quiet.

Came home via Shelf Moor where a Whitethroat was displaying at the Lion Gate. Hereabouts were 1 House Martin c5 Swallow, 2 Linnet, few Goldfinch, Pied Wagtail. 9 LBBG circling high overhead.
I had a traumatic experience with a friendly horse; it refused the dandelion leaves I gave to it!

Soil Hill Spectacular

SH 0925 hrs. You can't keep a good bird down, the Sedge Warbler has circumvented the bulldozers by simply flying approx 100 metres across the track and started singing energetically from the vegetation in front of the large house.

Who posted this crap photo on my blog?
Two LEO's were showing very well indeed all morning; one adult and one juvenile bird.

Other players: Common Snipe, 2 each of Lapwing, Reed Bunting & Whitethroat, 1 each Curlew & Red-legged Partridge, 3 Blackbird. A small number of Linnet, Meadow Pipit and Skylark as per usual and a few high up gulls knocking around.

The Silent Birder

The great Muhammad Ali RIP was actually a birder who masked this activity by becoming a legendary boxer. How do I know this? You may well ask. The giveway is in two of his famous quotes, thus:

"It's just a job. Grass grows, Birds Fly, waves pound the sand, I beat people up."
"Float like a Butterfly, sting like a Bee-Eater."

I rest my case.

Bradshaw to Ogden Res

From Bradshaw went via Lower Brockholes up through the golf course and plantation down to the water. Started off quiet, didn't improve much then got rather interesting.
First stretch: Goldfinches, Grey Wagtail, Oystercatcher, 2 Curlew, Bullfinch.
In the plantation: Spotted Flycatcher heard but damned if I could see 'em, however once again I got the Siskin pr, a few Goldfinch and Chaffinch.

Was uplifted to get 3 Oystercatcher on the shoreline, exactly in same spot as where the Greenshanks were a month ago.

The drake Goosander reappeared, joined by 2 drake Tufted Duck and a BHG.
